SACRAMENTO, California — A 9-month-old suffered fentanyl poisoning, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

The sheriff's office said first responders were called around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday night after a child fell out of a high chair and was unresponsive.

Deputies found the 9-month-old girl suffering from fentanyl poisoning at an apartment complex on Elkhorn Boulevard.

"Fire administered Narcan to revive her, transported her to Mercy San Juan. She went into cardiac arrest there. They gave her another dose of Narcan," said Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper.

He said the baby girl was later taken to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment. The sheriff's office said she is expected to survive.

As she recovers, investigators are trying to find out how the drug got into her system.

"I mean, a 9-month-old, think about that. They're barely crawling, if that, and getting around, not really walking yet. How does a 9-month-old ingest fentanyl? And that's very disconcerting," Sheriff Cooper said.

Cooper said his deputies see fentanyl in a variety of forms and they all carry Narcan.

Cooper said it’s going to take a variety of solutions to fix the problem and several things need to be addressed.

"One, traffickers. Just massive amounts of fentanyl is being trafficked in and brought in into our state. That's an issue in itself. Secondly, rehabilitation. If you're an addict, there's no place to go," he said.

The sheriff's office said the baby's parents are being interviewed and deputies will serve a search warrant at the apartment.

This is a developing story and will be updated as we learn more.
