Sainsbury’s has rolled out cardboard hangers across its Tu Clothing Baby range, replacing five million plastic hangers and saving 103 tonnes of plastic from being used.

According to the retailer, the move is a supermarket first and will be available in over 400 stores. It added that the launch followed a successful trial.

In a statement, Sainsbury’s said: “To encourage a circular economy for packaging, Sainsbury’s offers an in-store recycling service for Tu Clothing plastic hangers. When checking out in store, customers and colleagues can leave behind their plastic hangers, which will then be returned for recycling. Between January and July this year, Sainsbury’s returned 12 million hangers from checkouts, equivalent to 85 tonnes of plastic.”

It highlighted other changes including the switch of laundry detergent packs from plastic to cardboard and the removal of single use trays from its ‘by Sainsbury’s’ whole chicken range. Sainsbury’s said that those two changes have saved 162 tonnes of plastic each year.
